nye party

In the words of my sister Julia, "This is the best party ever!"

I decided to throw a party today in honor of New Year's Eve. I know what you're thinking. I don't do parties. And you're right. I don't. However, this was a special kind of party. What kind of party, you ask? It was a weeding party!! (p.s. if you Google "weeding party" all that comes up is "wedding party" pictures. Just goes to show that you can't Google everything...)

With the rain we got a few weeks ago and the cooler temperatures, the weeds in my front and back yards started to attack with a venegence. It was time to strike back. I put out an invitation to my family letting them know I was throwing the party and that they were invited to come if they wanted to. Mom, Faith, and Julia came to my party. We spent a few hours weeding and spraying and the yards look GREAT!

I think I'm going to throw this kind of party every year...

chef crush

I have a chef crush. Robert Irvine from Food Network. I love him. He's British and is ah-mazing when it comes to food. Sometimes he looks like a lizard, but I want him to come and cook me dinner every night.

christmas 2011

For those of you who don't know: I'm 29 and still single.

Why does this matter? Because it means I still get to sleep over at my parent's house on Christmas Eve, and that I still get presents from Santa! (Mom and Dad decided last year that as soon as you are married, you don't get a stocking or a present from Santa. We all still get our traditional book pile, and the $$ that they would have spend on your Santa gifts gets converted over to your present from Mom and Dad, so everything still works out to be equal, it's just the name on the name tags that changes.) This year (as with Thanksgiving) we decided to do a few things differently. Since Christmas Eve was on a Saturday we decided to go up north to find some snow to play in and then go out to lunch as a family.

More pictures and a detailed decription of the day are on my family's blog: http://mclaws1981.blogspot.com.

Christmas Eve we had a program and exchanged our sibling gifts like we normally do. Then everyone went home. Christmas morning my Mom, Dad, Faith, Julia, and I opened our Santa gifts, stockings, and miscelanious gifts from our grandparents. Then, since it was Sunday, we got ready for Church. I had been asked about a month ago to help with one of the choir numbers in my parent's ward, so I went to Sacrament Meeting with them. Mom is the choir pianist, my sisters both sang in the choir (Julia even had a solo!) and I sang and played my flute for one song. Since Dad is now the Bishop in their ward, he gave the closing talk. It was like the McLaws Family Christmas Show or something! But it was all very nice and I only messed up in one part on my flute accompaniment! Yea me!

After church we went back to Mom and Dad's and waited for everyone else to come over so we could open our book piles and our Mom and Dad presents. We had a very nice Christmas dinner of goose, potato casserole, steamed veggies, rice, and jello. Present opening went late (till 9pm!). Finally everyone went home and the house was quiet (a 2 year old and a 4 year old make a LOT of noise at Christmas!).

Monday we woke up and drove out to my Grandma and Grandpa McLaws' house in Gold Canyon for our extended family Christmas party. We had decided this year to do it the day after Christmas since everyone was off work and to make it a brunch. The food was yummy and the white elephant exchange was funny as usual.

All in all it was a great Christmas!

12 days of training

I recently started a new position at work. For the past 3.5 weeks I have been in training. Here's a little peek into what my days have been like...

To get the full effect you can sing along. I'm sure you'll all recognize the tune, and to save everyone the painful agony of singing FOREVER, I am only going to give you the last verse with all twelve days listed. You can thank me later.

Ready? Here we go....

On the twelfth day of training, Apollo Group gave to me....

-2 pended files (couldn't finish the files due to computer issues, see below)

-a new hatred of PeopleSoft (the computer program we use. I swear there's a new error message that pops up every day...)

-17 levels of Bejeweled (seriously, I am getting GOOD at this game in all my spare time!)

-6 clean files (finally getting the hang of this thing. I think.)

-no more calls from students (best. Christmas present. ever)

-several e-books read (along with playing Bejeweled on my phone, I've also had a lot of time to read)

-3 chapters written (started writing a new story!!)

-5 percent error (on my practice files) (did you hold this one out when you were singing? "5 perrrrrrr-cent error!)

-6 hours of waiting (takes a LONG time to get feedback back)

-11 practice files (did 11 in one day, then sat most of the next day doing nothing but reading and playing Bejeweled)

-1 old man burping (seriously. old guy next to me burps all. day. long. And, I'm pretty sure he's also a vampire. I don't know ANYBODY that has THAT pointy of incisors except those pesky neighborhood blood-suckers we all love...)

-a new computer in a new building

this month

N---no more 42" TV. For those who didn't hear, we got robbed earlier this month. They took the TV, both Katy and I's laptops, the Wii, and my camera. They ransacked both of our closets, but didn't take anything else. Except for my Lord of the Rings boxed set of DVDs. Can you say random? I've been working on filling out the paperwork for my insurance so I can get a check to go replace everything. In the meantime, I have no computer at home (so I can't update as often as I want to, and have realized how much time I waste online...) and have my parent's old 19" TV hooked up to my satellite box.

O---old pictures. I've been working on updating some scrapbooks as Christmas presents. It's been fun to look back at old pictures and remember things that have happened.

V---varying weather. Seriously, Mother Nature can NOT make up her mind! One day it's 72, the next it's 64, then it will be 80. Make up your mind!!

E---"ersity of Pho." I got to work one morning and part of the University of Phoenix sign on the building was burned out. All it said was "ersity of Pho." It made me laugh. Speaking of work...I was offered a new position last week and will begin training next week! Instead of being a Financial Aid Advisor, working directly with students, I am going to be on the operations side, processing financial aid applications. I'm really excited for the change, and I can't help feeling that this is just another indication that I am on the right track as far as my education and future career plans go. Hopefully this new position will let me be able to keep my job while going to school full time next Fall.

M---myfitnesspal.com. This is my new favorite website. It's free and it's awesome! You sign up and it tells you how many calories you need each day based on what you weigh currently and what your fitness/weightloss goals are, then you log all the food you eat each day and it tracks your progres. I love it!

B---Breaking Dawn pt 1. Hated it. SOOOO cheesy. Seriously, some books should NOT be made into movies.

E---Esposito. I fell in love with him last night and want him to hold me at night. (He's a character on the show Castle).

R---Repeat. Taylor Swift's Speak Now CD has been on repeat in my car all month. For some reason I can't get enough of those songs which is kind of funny because I didn't like that album at all when it first came out. There is one song in particular that I especially love right now and which gives me writing inspiration every time I hear it....

what is it about a jerkin?

So...there's this new show on ABC called "Once Upon A Time." Betcha you can figure out what's it's about, right? Yep. Fairy tale stuff. It centers around Snow White and her Prince Charming (who's name, we found out last night, is James). Josh Dallas (the actor who plays James) is just so dreamy! Last night I fell in love.

I hate to admit it, but...Phillip might have some competition now when it comes to my favorite Prince. What is it about a man in a flowey shirt, a leather jerkin, and big sword???

*swoon*

30 day challenge - Day 2

Day 2: A picture of you and the person you have been closest with the longest:

My BFF Kristy. Our frienship started when our Mom's started carpooling to seminary when we were 14 and the rest is history! She's my story fairy, and I'm not sure how I would have made it this long without her. She's the only one who gets me and allows me to completely be myself. I love going on vacation adventures with her (even if all we do is read in bed or sleep in all weekend)!

36 weeks

In 36 weeks I will be 30 years old.

*cue emotional breakdown*

I've decided to do a 36 weeks challenge. If I'm going to be old, I want to at least look good. Here's the plan:

No sugar
Walk 30 minutes a day at work during lunch
Follow food-combining eating plan (basically LOTS of vegetables)

The goal: lose 2-4 pounds per week.

pumpkin cupcakes

Best thing you will put in your mouth. Seriously. Make these. You'll thank me later.

Cupcakes:
4 c. cake flour (not self-rising)
1 t. baking soda
1 T. + 1 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
2 t. ground cinnamon
1 T. ground ginger
1 t. nutmeg
1/4 t. ground cloves
1 c. (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temp.
2 1/2 c. packed light brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 c. buttermilk
1 1/2 c. canned pumpkin (not pie filling)

Spiced Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
1/3 c. butter, softened
3/4 t. ground allspice
1 1/2 - 2 c. confectioner's sugar
1 t. vanilla
2 T. milk

Preheat oven to 350. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners. Sift flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and spices.

With an electric mixer on med-high speed, cream butter and brown sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of buttermilk, and beating until just combined. Add pumpkin; beat until just combined.

Divide batter evenly amount lined cups, filling each three-quarters full. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer tines to wire racks to cool 10 minutes; turn out cupcakes onto racks and let cool completely. Cupcakes can be refrigerated up to 3 days in airtight containers.

When cupcakes are cool mix up frosting. Blend cream cheese, butter, and allspice. Gradually mix in the sugar, vanilla, and milk until the mixture is spreadable.

Frost and enjoy!

performances and promotions

Ever have one of those nights when your dreams are just plain up crazy? That was me last night.

Dream #1: I watched as JC Chasez and Justin Bieber sang two duets together at two different ball games. I think one was at a baseball game and one was a basketball game. They sang "American The Beautiful" and some Christmas song that I don't remember right now. JC, normally a sexy guy, wasn't looking too good in my dream. I had longer hair (reminiscent of 2004), he had all these strange little tattoos all over his neck and chin (I think they were Chinese symbols or something), and he was really skinny. Like. REALLY. More than usual. And I thought, "I have to tell Rachel (aka Kristy) that I think JC is anorexic."

Then the dream switched.

Dream #2: I was promoted to be a manager in a different department at work. Through a couple exchanged emails with my director (which were weird and strangely flirtatious) I met with him and a few other directors/managers at work and was offered the position. I don't remember what the department was (I actually don't think it was a real department) but it had something to do with processing instead of having any direct interaction with students. So, I was put in as the manager of this team and was driven over to the building where they were in (a weird, creepy, old house in a strange neighborhood) and introduced to the team. They were all people who had been at UOP for longer than I have and were kind of disgruntled that I had been put in as the manager.

That's where the dream ended.

Sometimes, I really hate dreams. Especially when they're weird and/or stressful, because I don't sleep very well and wake up tired.

phillip

I know I made an earlier post where I bashed Disney and the unrealistic expectations they gave me of life and love, BUT...Prince Phillip (from Sleeping Beauty) has always been my favorite and (as much as I love Flynn Rider) he always will be. (Forgive me Flynn!)

I love how instantly Phillip falls for Briar Rose and defies his father and the expectations of his birth to go after her, despite the fact that he believes her to be a "commoner." I love his singing voice. I love how desperately he fights for her when Maleficent takes Aurora and puts her under the spell. I love the look on his face when he walks down the stairs with his princess on his arm (who knew a 2-D, cartoon character could portray so much love??). And, although he's not as "buff" as others I think he's sexy and I love him.

Below are some of my favorite pictures of my Prince Charming...

In the words of Katy: "Nice butt, Phil!" :D

I realized today that I am excited for Halloween.

This is a new emotion for me.

I'm not sure what to do with it.

hawaii

Here's what we did:

*survived a 6 hours flight (both ways)
*watched Mr. Popper's Penguins and X-men First Class (on the plane)
*got lost trying to find out hotel (Waikiki Gateway)
*went to church (had Sacrament Meeting in the cultural hall)
*visited 2 temples (Buddist and Mormon)
*hiked Diamond Head (thought I was going to die several times)
*experienced Pearl Harbor (got emotional a few times)
*had lunch on the beach one day (love)
*saw Dolphin Tale and The Three Musketeers
*did tons of walking/window shopping (everything was SO expensive)
*took a tour of Kualoa Ranch (gorgeous scenery)
*fell in love at the Dole Plantation (pineapples everywhere and dole whips)
*went to a stupid macadamia nut farm (don't bother)
*got sunburned at the Polynesian Cultural Center (hawaiian pizza....not hawaiian)
*read and sunbathed on our balcony (was too exhausted to do anything else)
*drove around the island at least 6 times (the North Shore was my favorite)

Here's what I didn't like:

*paying $20 a night for parking (not joking)
*all the one-way streets (Waikiki is the most confusing place to drive)
*the humidity (nothing ever dried)
*how expensive everything was ($6 for a tiny salad)
*no volcanoes (would have liked to see some lava)
*the flight home (got a kink in my neck trying to sleep)

apropos

First of all, I love this word: apropos. It's fun to say, and when you say it, people think you're really smart. :)

We played a couple rounds of the game "Apples to Apples" today in our team meeting at work. As is often the case, the green cards that I won ended up describing me pretty well. "Very apropos," I thought.

According to the game today I am: courageous, cute, frivolous, and delicious.

sft

Friday night I went with Mom, Dad, and Faith to see this movie:

I had no idea what it was about before I got to the theater. All I knew was it was rated G and Robert Duvall was in it. I was pleasantly surprised to find out, the main guy was pretty hot.

Lucas Black. Mmmm....

But, beyond a good looking guy to look at on screen for a couple hours, I legitimately loved the movie. It was a great story with a lot of great lessons learned by the main character (and me). The main point of the movie was this: SFT.

What, you're probably asking yourself, is SFT? What does it stand for?

S: See God
F: Feel His love
T: Trust Him

They seem like little, simple things but, like one of my favorite sayings, "Enjoy the little things in life...for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." Being able to see God, to recognize and feel His love, and putting our trust in Him are three very small and simple things we can do that will bring about great changes in our lives.

So just remember: SFT.

the final frontier

When I was younger I wanted to live in space. My goal was to live on Mars. This movie came out right about the time I made this goal and I thought it was great!

I've always been a "space" nerd. I love Star Trek, Star Wars, and lots of other space-related books/movies/TV shows. Confession: I've always had a crush on Lt. Riker....

I took a Science Fiction class when I was at Dixie State and loved it. As I've gotten older, however, my goal of living in space is no longer on the list. I've seen way too many evil alien movies. Life on Earth is scary enough sometimes, why go into space where there's a change a huge, ugly, alien can suck my face off? No thanks.

Last night I had a dream about space. Somehow I was sucked into a black hole out in space and was transported to another planet. It was like Earth but it was different. Prettier. I don't remember what the aliens looked like on the planet, I just knew they were there and they were nice. There was another human on the planet. She had arrived there the same way I had back in the 1950s. I don't remember actually seeing any animals, but I knew that all the animals on the planet had at least 2 heads. Some of them had 3 or 4. The other woman who was there had a bunch of figurines on her desk of animals with multiple heads.

Uhm. K.

Here's what the dream dictionary says:

"To see or dream that you are in space, represents exploration and independent thinking. You are broadening your horizons and view. Alternatively, the dream may be a metaphor that you are 'spacing out.' You need to return your concentration back on your future and goals."

"To see aliens in your dream signify that you are having difficulties adapting and adjusting to your new surroundings. You are feeling 'alienated' and disconnected. You may be having difficulties with how to handle or deal with a certain situation or person. On a psychological level, seeing aliens represent an encounter with an unfamiliar or neglected aspect of your own self."

olive juice

Last night I watched the WORST movie EVER. I'm no stranger to bad movies (ask Katy sometime about the Love's Unending Marathon I made her watch earlier this year...) but this movie is now at the top of the Worst Movie list.

So what movie was it? Olive Juice.

Now. I can probably guess your next question. Why?

Did you happen to notice the two big words at the top of the above picture? That's the answer: Backstreet. Boys. Yes, that's right. I watched this HORRIBLE movie all because AJ McLean and Brian Littrell from the Backstreet Boys had a cameo appearance in it. I know, I know. I'm pathetic. But, admit it. It's one of the things you love about me! :)

Through the wonders of technology, I watched this movie with my bestie, Kristy. Below is the IM chat commentary we had while watching. Enjoy!

Kristy says:

Kristy says:

If I didn't know there was a backstreet connection here somewhere... I would not be watching this.

Cheryl says:
